Keyword Average Position
The Average Position Chart tracks where a website appears in search results over time — revealing whether rankings are improving, declining, or holding steady, and routing priority actions to the right tool.
Quick start
1. Select 30 Days and the target Search Group
2. Check the Google line first — an upward trend means improving rankings
3. Click anywhere on the chart to add an annotation marking an event (optional)
4. Click AI Analysis for a portfolio summary and priority actions
5. Click Add to Board on any action to add it to a project
Understanding the display
The chart uses a line graph where position 1 sits at the top because that's the best place to be — like leading a race. An upward trend means improving rankings. A downward trend signals decline.

• Solid lines: site performance
• Dotted lines: competitor performance (when tracked)
• Each colour: a different search engine
• Google shown by default: other engines are tracked but hidden — click the legend to reveal them
• Small dots on the line: carried-forward data — no fresh check occurred that day, so the previous position is displayed
• Red dashed vertical lines: annotations added to mark events on the chart
Position benchmarks
| Position | Meaning |
| 1–3 | Top of results, excellent visibility |
| 4–10 | First page, good visibility |
| 11–20 | Second page, limited visibility |
| 20+ | Deep in results, rarely seen |
What should I do next?
Average position determines where to focus effort:
| Position | Action |
| 1–3 | Protect it. Avoid changes without a clear plan. |
| 4–10 | Best quick wins. Run AI Analysis and implement 1–3 updates. |
| 11–20 | Stronger content needed. Expect more work. |
| 20+ | Major improvements required. Focus on top keywords first. |
| Flat line + poor position | Check when data last updated, then prioritise highest-volume keywords. |
Using the filters
Date range
| Option | Best for |
| 1 Day | Current status check |
| 7 Days | Recent changes |
| 30 Days | Trend analysis (default) |
| All Time | Long-term patterns |
Search group
A search group is a collection of tracked keywords, typically organised by website, location, or device type. Select the relevant group — only keywords in that group appear in the chart.
Example: "website.com – UK – Desktop"
Category
Keywords can be organised into categories (like "Product Pages" or "Blog Posts"). This filter focuses analysis on a specific group.
Competitor
Compare performance against tracked competitors. The competitor list updates automatically when a search group is selected.
• All Competitors: combined competitor data
• Specific Competitor: single rival focus
Interactive features
Hover over any point to see the exact date, position, and search engine.
Click legend items to show or hide individual lines. Google is shown by default; click any hidden engine in the legend to reveal it.
Export via the menu icon (⋮) to download the chart as PNG, JPEG, or SVG.
Annotations
Annotations mark events on the chart — a site migration, a content update, or an algorithm change — making it easier to spot what caused a ranking shift. Annotations are saved per search group and persist across sessions.
To add an annotation:
1. Click anywhere inside the chart area
2. The popover shows the date for that point — type a label
3. Press Enter or click Save
4. A red dashed vertical line appears on the chart with the label
To delete an annotation:
1. Click the annotation label on the chart
2. Confirm deletion in the prompt that appears
AI Analysis
AI Analysis examines the full keyword portfolio and surfaces up to five priority actions, each routed to the specific tool best placed to address it.

Running an analysis
1. Set filters (date range, search group, category, competitor)
2. Click AI Analysis
3. Wait for processing — typically 20–60 seconds
4. Review the Summary and Priority Actions below the chart
Taking too long? Switch to 7 Days or select a single category, then retry.

Troubleshooting
No data found
The selected filters may be too restrictive, or tracking has not started for this period.
• Expand the date range
• Select "All Categories"
• Verify keywords exist in the search group
No competitor data
The competitor may not rank for tracked keywords currently.
• Try "All Competitors" instead of a specific one
• Verify competitor tracking is enabled
AI Analysis works without competitor data — it focuses on absolute improvements instead.
Flat line
Rankings have not changed during this period. This is normal when rankings are strong. For poor rankings, check when data last updated.
AI Analysis taking too long or timing out
Data volume may be too high.
• Switch to 7 Days
• Select a specific category
• Retry
Annotations not appearing
Annotations are saved per search group. Confirm the same search group is selected as when the annotation was added.
FAQ
Can multiple competitors be compared at once?
Yes. Select "All Competitors" to see aggregated competitor data.
How often does ranking data update?
Rankings update daily. Exact timing depends on account configuration.
Why do different tools show different positions?
Tools check from different locations, times, and devices. Small differences are normal.
How does the AI select which keywords to analyse?
The analysis examines the full keyword portfolio and surfaces up to five items with the strongest signals — large position drops, high volatility, URL switching, high-volume opportunities, and significant position changes.
Can I add annotations for dates in the past?
Yes. Click any point in the chart to add an annotation at that date, whether past or present.
What is "Add to Board"?
The Board is wheremore's project and task management tool. Adding an action creates a task with the keyword, page URL, and recommended next step pre-filled, ready to action.
What does TIA use to answer questions after an analysis?
TIA has full context from the most recent analysis — the portfolio summary, keyword signals, and priority actions — so answers are specific to the current results.
