User Behaviour Traffic Sources

Traffic sources on the User Behaviour dashboard shows where the sessions on the selected page or pages came from, on which devices, and which pages received them.

Traffic source mix

Traffic source mix shows the top five sources plus Other, with sessions and share for each, for example "8 ยท 50.0%".

Referring pages from the same website are grouped under the site name. Direct means the visit had no referrer. Visits from another page on your own website appear under your own domain.

Share is calculated from the sessions in Traffic sources, which can differ from the Sessions card in Engagement overview.

Traffic by page table

Traffic by page lists every combination of page, traffic source and device.

Column Meaning
Page The page that received the sessions.
Traffic source The referring page, or Direct. It opens the referring page in a new tab.
Device Desktop, Mobile or Tablet.
Sessions Sessions for that combination.
Share That combination's share of all sessions in Traffic sources.

Type in Filter pages or sources to search by page, source or device. The count beside it shows how many combinations match. Click a column heading to sort, and click it again to reverse the order. Rows per page changes how many rows each screen shows.

Export CSV from Traffic sources

Export CSV in Traffic sources downloads the Traffic by page rows that match your search, including Share. Export report on the dashboard also offers a Traffic by page CSV, which includes every row and no Share column.

Conversion attempts by entry referrer

With conversion comparison switched on, Conversion attempts by entry referrer shows where each group's attempts started.

Column Meaning
Entry source The referring site at the start of the attempt. "Direct / no referrer" means there was none, "Not recorded" means the referrer was not captured, and "Other referrer" means it could not be read as a site.
Converted Converted attempts from that source, with their share of the Converted group, for example "4 (100%)".
Dropped off Dropped off attempts from that source, with their share of the Dropped off group.

"No confirmed attempts" means the group is empty. Entry source is where an attempt started, not revenue attribution.

Traffic sources with a single traffic source selected

With a single traffic source selected on the User Behaviour dashboard, Traffic sources shows only that source. The Traffic source filter lists every source recorded for the selected page or pages, period, device and audience.

Common misreadings of Traffic sources

Belief Correction
Traffic source sessions add up to the Sessions card. They are counted separately and can differ. Use Sessions for the page total and Share to compare sources.
Direct means visitors typed the address. Direct means no referrer was recorded.
My own domain as a source is external traffic. It is visitors arriving from another page on your website.
Entry source shows which channel earned the conversion. It shows where the attempt started. It is not revenue attribution.
The two Traffic by page CSV files are the same. Export CSV follows your search and includes Share. The Export report CSV includes every row without Share.
