Annotations
Annotations let you mark important events directly on your charts — a dashed red line appears on the date you choose, with a short label you write. They stay on the chart every time you come back.
Quick start
|
1 |
Navigate to any supported chart Find the date you want to annotate on the chart. |
|
2 |
Click inside the chart plot area Click anywhere inside the chart on or near that date. A small input box appears after a short pause. |
|
3 |
Type a short label Describe the event — for example, "Easter campaign" or "Site redesign live". Keep it brief so it fits on the chart. |
|
4 |
Press Enter or click Save The dashed red line and your label appear on the chart immediately and are saved to your account. |
| Keyboard shortcuts: Press Enter to save. Press Escape to close the box without saving. |
Understanding the display
Each annotation appears as a vertical dashed red line on the chart, with a short label positioned just above it. Annotations are tied to the filters that were active when they were saved — switch to a different search group, keyword, or project and they will not appear.
Annotations are shared across the account. Everyone with access to the same account and filters sees the same annotations, so the whole team benefits from context added by any member.
What should I do next?
| Situation | Action |
| Unexplained spike or drop | Add an annotation on that date describing what happened — campaign launch, site change, algorithm update, or competitor move. |
| Returning to a chart weeks later | Read existing annotations first — they explain why the data moved. |
| Annotation added with wrong label | Delete it by clicking the label text on the chart, then add a new one with the corrected text. |
| Chart looks cluttered | Annotate only events that directly explain a data change — not every minor update. |
| Annotation not visible | Confirm the same filters (search group, keyword, path, project) are selected as when it was saved, and that the date falls within the current date range. |
Adding an annotation
Annotations are added directly from the chart — no settings page needed. Navigate to a supported chart, click inside the plot area on the date you want to mark, and the input box opens automatically.
Deleting an annotation
To remove an annotation, click directly on its label text on the chart. A confirmation prompt appears — click OK to delete. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
Labels cannot be edited after saving. To correct a label, delete the annotation and add a new one with the updated text on the same date.
Where annotations appear
Annotations are scoped to the filters that were active when you saved them. The table below shows every supported chart and what each annotation is scoped to.
| Chart | Dashboard / section | Annotation scoped to |
| Keyword Summary | Keywords | Search group + specific keyword |
| Average Position | Keywords | Search group |
| Conversion Path CVR | Conversions | Specific conversion path |
| Sessions per Page | User Behaviour | Domain, and optionally a specific page |
| Customer Journey Progression | AI Visibility | Project + configuration * |
| Share of Voice | AI Visibility | Project + configuration * |
| Competitive Win Rate | AI Visibility | Project + configuration * |
| Conversation Sentiment | AI Visibility | Project + configuration * |
| Citation Rate | AI Visibility | Project + configuration * |
* All five AI Visibility charts share the same annotations. An annotation added on any one of them appears on all five — add it once per conversion path.
Keywords — Keyword Summary chart
Annotations are scoped to the search group and the specific keyword that was active on save. Switch to a different keyword or a different search group and the annotation will not appear there.
Keywords — Average Position chart
Annotations are scoped to the search group that was active on save. They appear across the average position trend for that group.
Conversions — Path CVR chart
Annotations are scoped to the specific conversion path. They will not appear on a different path even if the domain is the same.
Sessions per Page chart
Annotations are scoped to the domain and, if a specific page was selected, to that page. An annotation saved while viewing a single page only appears when that page is selected. An annotation saved while no page filter is active appears for all pages on that domain.
AI Visibility dashboard
All five AI Visibility charts share the same annotation layer. Annotations are scoped to the project and configuration that were active when saved. An event like a new competitor entering the market is relevant across all AI visibility metrics at once — add it once and it covers all five charts.
Tips for writing good annotations
A good label is short, specific, and self-explanatory when read months later. Aim for enough detail to understand what happened without needing to check notes elsewhere.

Troubleshooting
Clicked the chart but nothing happened
Click inside the chart plot area, not on the legend, axes, title, or outside the chart border. There is a short pause before the input box appears — this is normal. Some charts also require an active filter (search group, project, etc.) before annotations are enabled; check that a filter is selected.
Annotation not visible
The annotated date may fall outside the current date range — expand it to include the date. Also confirm the same search group, keyword, conversion path, domain, page, or AI visibility project is selected as when the annotation was saved. Scoping is exact: a different filter value hides annotations saved under other values.
Accidentally deleted an annotation
Deletion is permanent — there is no undo. Add the annotation again on the same date with the same label.
AI Visibility annotation appearing on all five charts
This is correct behaviour. All five AI Visibility charts share one annotation layer, scoped to the project and configuration. Adding an annotation on any one of them covers all five simultaneously.
Annotation saved with wrong search group
Annotations cannot be moved between groups. Delete the annotation, select the correct group, then add it again on the same date.
Frequently asked questions
Can other team members see my annotations?
Yes. Annotations are visible to everyone with access to the same account and filters. Sub-account users’ annotations are also visible to the parent account.
Will annotations show if I change the date range?
Yes, as long as the annotated date falls within the selected date range. Zoom in to a window that does not include the annotation date and the line will not be visible.
Can I edit an annotation label after saving?
Not currently. Delete the annotation and add a new one with the corrected text.
How many annotations can I add?
There is no hard limit. Charts with many annotations can become cluttered, so annotate only events that genuinely explain a data change.
Can I annotate across all search groups at once?
No. Each annotation is scoped to the filters active at the time of saving. To mark an event across multiple groups, add the annotation separately in each group.
I deleted an annotation by mistake — can I get it back?
No. Deletion is permanent. Add the annotation again on the same date.
