User Behaviour Page Depth Engagement
Page depth engagement on the User Behaviour dashboard shows behaviour at each point down a page, from 0% at the top to 100% at the bottom, in 5% steps. It has three views: Reach, Time and Clicks. The selected period and the previous period are drawn as separate series.
Reach, Time and Clicks views
| Tab | What it shows | Axis |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | The share of recorded sessions that scrolled at least this far. It always starts at 100%. | Sessions reaching depth |
| Time | The average time recorded at each depth, for sessions that reached it. | Average time |
| Clicks | The number of clicks recorded at each depth. | Clicks |
Hover over a point to see the values for that depth.
How page depth is measured
Reach and Time in Page depth engagement are based on how far visitors scrolled. Clicks are placed by where on the page each click happened. The two do not line up exactly.
Scrolling to a depth does not tell you which content a visitor saw there, and a depth does not correspond to the same position in an image of the page.
Page depth engagement with a single traffic source
With a single traffic source selected on the User Behaviour dashboard, the Reach and Time views still include visits from every source. The Clicks view is filtered to that source when click tracking by source covers both the selected and previous periods. If it does not, the Clicks view shows "Click data for this traffic source does not cover both periods yet."
Converted and Dropped off lines
With conversion comparison switched on, Page depth engagement adds dashed lines for the Converted and Dropped off groups. The legend gives the number of measured attempts in each group, for example "Converted (4 measured attempts)".
| View | Dashed line shows | Axis |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | The share of each group's measured attempts that scrolled at least this far. | Same as the main chart |
| Time | Seconds per measured attempt at each depth. | Right-hand axis, Seconds per measured attempt |
| Clicks | Clicks per measured attempt at each depth. | Right-hand axis, Clicks per measured attempt |
If a group cannot be drawn, a note under the chart says so, for example "Dropped off: no confirmed attempts" or "Converted: measurements not available yet".

Common misreadings of Page depth engagement
| Belief | Correction |
|---|---|
| Reaching a depth means the visitor saw the content there. | Scrolling to a depth does not show which content was on screen. |
| A depth matches the same position in a page image. | Depth is how far visitors scrolled, not a map of the page's sections. |
| Long time at a depth means visitors were reading. | It is time recorded at that depth. It does not show whether visitors were reading. |
| A click spike and a reach drop at the same depth relate to the same content. | Clicks and reach are measured differently and do not line up exactly. |
| The Time view adds up to Average time spent. | The Time view divides by the sessions that reached each depth; Average time spent divides by all sessions. |
| Dashed lines are sessions. | Dashed lines count conversion attempts, and use their own axis in Time and Clicks. |
