Understanding the display

What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results for certain queries. They synthesise information from multiple sources and display it directly in the SERP.
For SEO, AI Overviews represent both opportunity and challenge:
• Opportunity: Being cited as a source increases visibility and authority
• Challenge: AI Overviews can reduce clicks to organic results
Domain source count
The domain source count displays how many keywords have AI Overviews where the tracked domain is cited as a source. A higher count indicates greater visibility in AI-generated results.
Table columns
| Column | Description |
| Keyword | The search term that triggered an AI Overview |
| Volume | Monthly search volume for the keyword |
| Sections | Number of content sections in the AI Overview |
| Sources | Number of sources cited in the AI Overview |
| Summary | Preview of the AI Overview content (first 20 words) |
| Source | Badge appears if tracked domain is cited as a source |
Row highlighting
Rows where the tracked domain is cited as a source appear highlighted. These keywords are sorted to the top of results, making it easy to identify where content is already gaining AI Overview visibility.
What should I do next?
| Situation | Meaning | Action |
| Domain cited as source | Content is being used by Google's AI | Protect and strengthen this content |
| High-volume keyword, not cited | Opportunity to gain AI visibility | Review cited sources; improve content to match |
| Many sections, few sources | AI Overview relies on limited sources | Comprehensive content has better chance of citation |
| Low source count overall | AI Overview is tightly focused | Target specific, authoritative answers |
| No AI Overview for keyword | Google doesn't generate AI summary | Focus on traditional SEO; AI Overview not available |

Source rank positions

Using the filters

Workspace

Why AI Overviews matter
Visibility in AI search
AI Overviews appear prominently at the top of search results. Being cited as a source provides brand visibility even when users don't click through to the site.
Authority signal
Google cites sources it considers authoritative and trustworthy. Appearing as a source reinforces domain authority and expertise.
Content strategy insights
Understanding what content gets cited reveals what Google's AI considers valuable. This informs content creation and optimisation strategies.
Troubleshooting
No data showing
A search group must be selected for data to display. If a search group is selected but no data appears:
• Tracked keywords may not trigger AI Overviews
• AI Overview data may not be available yet for new keywords
• Workspace filtering may exclude relevant domains
Domain source count shows zero
This indicates tracked domains are not currently cited in any AI Overviews for tracked keywords. This is common—not all content gets cited. Review the sources being cited to understand what content Google prefers.

FAQ
How often does AI Overview data update?
AI Overview data is captured during regular ranking checks. The system stores the latest snapshot for each keyword.
Do AI Overviews appear for all keywords?
No. Google only generates AI Overviews for certain query types. Informational queries are more likely to trigger AI Overviews than transactional or navigational queries.
Does being cited guarantee traffic?
Citation provides visibility but doesn't guarantee clicks. Users may get their answer from the AI Overview without visiting the source. However, citation builds brand awareness and authority.
Why is my content not being cited?
AI Overview citations depend on many factors: content quality, authority, relevance, and how well content matches the query intent. Review cited sources to understand what characteristics Google prefers.
Is this data available for Bing or Yahoo?
AI Overview tracking currently covers Google only. Bing and Yahoo have different AI integration approaches.
