Competitor Opportunities
The Competitor Keyword Opportunities tab surfaces keywords where both your site and competitors rank outside the top 10—revealing gaps where improved content can capture positions that nobody currently owns.
Quick start
1. Select a Search Group to filter results
2. Click the Opportunities tab
3. Review keywords sorted by search volume (highest first)
4. Focus on high-volume keywords where your position is close to page 1
Understanding the display
The table shows keywords where both your site and at least one competitor rank below position 10. These represent shared weaknesses—keywords where the top positions are available to whoever improves their content first.

Table columns
| Column | Description |
| Keyword | The search term representing an opportunity |
| Volume | Monthly search volume for this keyword |
| Engine | Search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo) |
| Best Rank | Your site's current position for this keyword |
What makes something an "opportunity"
A keyword qualifies as an opportunity when:
• Your site ranks outside the top 10 (position 11 or worse)
• At least one competitor also ranks outside the top 10
The logic is simple: if competitors are struggling to rank for these keywords too, the competition is weaker. Focusing effort here can yield faster results than targeting keywords where competitors already dominate.
What should I do next?
| Situation | Action |
| High volume, position 11–20 | Priority opportunity. Content improvements can push to page 1. |
| High volume, position 20+ | Requires significant work. Assess if ROI justifies effort. |
| Low volume, position 11–20 | Quick win if effort is minimal. May not drive major traffic. |
| Multiple opportunities for same topic | Create comprehensive content covering related keywords together. |
| No opportunities showing | Competitors have captured all shared keywords. Focus on differentiation. |
Using the filters
Search group
Select a search group to focus on keywords within that tracking configuration. The dropdown filters all tabs, including Opportunities.
Workspace
If workspaces are configured, Opportunities respects the active workspace selection. Only domains within the current workspace appear in results.
Pagination
Results are paginated with 10 keywords per page. Use the navigation controls at the bottom to move between pages. The total count shows how many opportunities exist across all pages.
Reading the data
Example interpretation
A row showing:
• Keyword: "best project management software"
• Volume: 12,000
• Engine: Google
• Best Rank: 14
This means your site ranks at position 14 for a keyword with 12,000 monthly searches, and competitors are also struggling with this keyword. Since position 14 is close to page 1, targeted content improvements have a good chance of breaking through.
Prioritising opportunities
The table is sorted by search volume (highest first). This surfaces the highest-traffic potential at the top. However, also consider:
• Position proximity — Keywords at position 11–15 need less effort than position 50+
• Business relevance — High volume means nothing if the keyword does not convert
• Content investment — Some keywords require substantial new content; others need refinements
Why competitor opportunities matter
When both you and competitors rank poorly for a keyword, it signals one of two things:
• Content gap — Nobody in your niche has created truly excellent content for this topic
• Difficult keyword — The keyword is dominated by authoritative sites outside your competitive set
In the first case, creating comprehensive, high-quality content can capture rankings that competitors have failed to secure. In the second case, the opportunity may be harder to exploit, but at least competitors are not benefiting either.
Troubleshooting
No opportunities found
Either all shared keywords have at least one party ranking in the top 10, or no competitor data exists. Verify competitor tracking is configured and that competitors rank for some of the same keywords.
Volume shows "—"
Search volume data is unavailable for this keyword. The keyword is still a valid opportunity based on ranking positions; volume data may update in future checks.
Error loading data
Refresh the page. If the problem persists, verify the search group selection is valid and that you have access to the selected domains.
FAQ
Why position 10 as the threshold?
Position 10 marks the bottom of page 1 on most search engines. Keywords where everyone ranks below this threshold represent opportunities to capture page 1 visibility that nobody currently has.
How is "Best Rank" calculated?
Best Rank shows your site's highest (best) position for this keyword across the tracked period. This represents your peak performance, not necessarily current position.
Can the same keyword appear multiple times?
Yes. If a keyword qualifies as an opportunity on multiple search engines, each engine appears as a separate row.
How often does this data update?
The data updates as new ranking checks complete. The aggregated opportunity data refreshes regularly based on the latest competitor and site position data.
